December 2017 explores both software and hardware synthesizers. I bought my first hardware synth last year and am diving deep into both digital and analog synthesis. A friend of mine gave me the task of making an entire track from the analog synth, including the percussion, and “5 185” is the result of that challenge. Soft synths find their way onto most of the other tracks, especially the new instruments from Output. “In the Pines” was commissioned by Jenny Stulberg and Lauren Simpson for “Still Life No. 7”. Guitarist Austin Booth recorded several variations of the harmonic structure from the old tune, “In The Pines”, which I then abstracted into the track here.
